Most homeowners think about their pool in May. The cover comes off, the water clears, and whatever was wrong last September is suddenly a problem that needs solving right now — in the middle of the season you waited all year for.
There is a better window, and it opens the week your pool closes. B&B Custom Pools has been building and renovating in-ground pools across the Lehigh Valley since 1973, and the fall and winter months are when a great deal of our renovation work actually happens. An off-season pool renovation might just be the right move, giving you more time to fix, refinish, or rethink an existing pool.
Your pool is already closed, so the work costs you nothing in swim time
This is the plainest advantage and the one homeowners underestimate. A resurfacing project in July means draining or a pool you are trying to use. Most renovations we take on are completed in two to four weeks. Done in the off-season, that timeline disappears into months when nobody was swimming anyway. Done in June, it costs you a meaningful piece of your season.
Pennsylvania winters make small problems bigger
Our freeze-thaw cycles are hard on pools. Water works into hairline cracks in coping and waterline tile, freezes, expands, and widens what it found. A cracked coping stone noticed at closing is a cosmetic issue in October and can be a structural one by April.
The same logic applies to plaster. A pool surface typically lasts 15 to 20 years, and once it starts flaking or feeling rough underfoot, it has reached the end of its life rather than developed a stain you can treat. Addressing it before a winter of freeze-thaw is the difference between resurfacing and repairing.
Six signs your pool is telling you something
These are the reasons homeowners most often call us, drawn from what we see on site across the Valley:
- Surface stains that will not clear. Persistent discoloration that chemical treatment cannot resolve usually means the plaster underneath is breaking down.
- Rough or flaking surfaces. If the floor feels abrasive or the plaster is peeling, the surface has reached the end of its lifespan.
- Cracked tile or loose coping. Both a cosmetic and a structural concern, and both accelerated by our winters.
- Rising energy bills. Older single-speed pumps and inefficient heaters cost considerably more to run than current equipment.
- A design that no longer fits your life. The pool was built for the household you had then. Tanning ledges, LED lighting, and connected spas can all be added to a pool that already exists.
- Unexplained water loss. Soggy patches in the lawn or a pump that runs constantly can point to structural issues worth a professional look.
Equipment upgrades pay you back starting next season
Of everything on that list, equipment is the item with the clearest return. Replacing an aging single-speed pump with a variable-speed model can reduce energy costs by up to 80%. Swapping filters, heaters, and controls at the same time means one visit rather than three.
Doing it in the off-season means the savings are in place the moment you open, rather than starting halfway through a summer of running old equipment.
What an off-season renovation actually includes
Renovation covers more ground than most homeowners expect. Every scope below is handled by our own in-house crews:
- Resurfacing and refinishing. Old plaster removed and replaced with your choice of finish — traditional Marbelite, pebble aggregate, or premium quartz. Marbelite in particular can last 40 or more years.
- Tile and coping replacement. A single upgrade that changes the entire look of the pool.
- Equipment upgrades. Modern Hayward or Jandy pumps, filters, heaters, and controls.
- Deck and patio expansion. Cracked concrete replaced, or an upgrade to pavers or natural stone.
- Feature additions. Water features, LED lighting, sun shelves, tanning ledges, spa spillovers, and automation.
- Safety cover installation. Merlin Professional Safety Covers, designed with CAD to your pool’s exact shape.

How the process works
- Free renovation consultation. A renovation specialist visits your property, inspects the pool’s condition, talks through your goals, and walks you through the options. No cost and no obligation.
- Custom renovation plan. We build a detailed scope with material selections, timeline, and transparent pricing. You approve every element before work starts.
- Expert execution. Our in-house crews handle the renovation with clear communication throughout. Most projects complete in two to four weeks.
One team, one plan for the whole backyard
A renovation is often the moment a backyard gets rethought rather than repaired. Because we design and build pools, landscaping, and outdoor structures under one roof, a pool resurfacing conversation can become a conversation about the patio, the plantings, and the outdoor kitchen that were never quite right either — planned together, by the same team, on one schedule.
That is the same approach we have taken on more than 1,000 pools built from our Emmaus shop, serving Allentown, Bethlehem, Coopersburg, and the greater Lehigh Valley.
Plan it now, swim in it in May
An off-season pool renovation is a spring-ready pool. The work happens while the cover is on, the finish cures through the cold months, and the season opens on a pool that looks and performs like a new one.
If your pool showed you any of the six signs above at closing this year, now is the moment to look at it properly. Our renovation specialists provide a free on-site inspection to assess condition, discuss what you want, and lay out your options with no obligation.
